While participating in a creative writing workshop, we were asked to recall a particularly difficult time and then write one line/phrase at a time, as directed by the creative director. I was surprised by what was “pulled out of me” through this exercise, the emotion of the prior experience giving voice to the turmoil of my current situation.

INTO THE DEEP
I was desperate, my life was burning all around me, bitter and burnt fragrance.
I swallowed hard, dry mouth, chalky
As I came to where your people gathered.
A retreat, women gathering to hear Your voice, to experience grace.
From the screen, the gentle sounds of waves being welcomed by the sand of the beach.
Taming of wild strength, a home for bare feet.
Pebbled sand evidence of broken shells turned white by the sun.
“Why have you brought me here Lord? You have been silent for so long, will you now speak?”
From deep waters, I heard your voice invite me.
“Come walk with me on the waters of your troubles.
Take a step, move a step towards me, that’s all I ask of you. I will do the work, I will uphold you.”
The lyric of oceans mimic the churning, pounding of my heart.
“Into the deep, I’m with you My daughter.
Into the deep, to walk on water.”

PRAYER (a reading of Psalm 32:7-8 NIV)
“You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.
I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.”
